While I am not an avid prefold user, Gerber DSQ diapers still come in handy for me.
Gerber Diaper Service Quality (DSQ) diapers are available in newborn, regular, and toddler sizes. DSQ diapers are described using a set of three numbers which refer to the number of layers of fabric in each panel, with the middle number referring to the center panel. I have on hand 2/5/2 newborn size as well as both 4/6/4 and 4/8/4 regular size Gerber DSQ prefolds. While common sense says that the 4/8/4 diapers should be more absorbent (because they have two extra layers of fabric in the center panel), I haven't found much difference in absorbency between the 4/8/4's (which are only available through online shopping) and the 4/6/4's (which are available at some Sears, Toys R Us, and Babies R Us stores).
When I made the switch to cloth diapers, I ordered a dozen Gerber DSQ's because I thought you had to. I was clueless! I did manage to find the best use for these diapers though! I fold them up and use them as a doubler for our overnight diapering system! They are perfect for this purpose. No matter what diaper and cover I had tried before, my son was always able to wet through overnight. Then I discovered that the Gerber DSQ's make excellent doublers. We now use a Gerber DSQ overnight every night and we have never had a leak with this system! The Gerber DSQ diapers are soft, quilty, and very absorbent. These diapers also work well inserted into a Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapering system.
Gerber DSQ diapers also come in handy for many other reasons. Use them as burp cloths, lap pads, a quick and handy changing pad when out and about. This is a versatile diaper that should be in every baby home and in every diaper bag.
While the Gerber DSQ diapers are more expensive than some lesser quality products, they are actually less expensive than other diaper service quality diapers, while still maintaining the same high levels of softness and absorbency.
